Thoughtful exterior care

Refresh the timber. Respect the grain.

Garden fencing weathers at different rates. Shaded sections may collect green growth, while exposed panels develop a grey tone. A measured clean can improve the appearance of sound timber, but it cannot reverse rot or make a weakened panel structurally sound.

Excessive pressure or an unsuitable abrasive process can roughen the grain and damage softwood. The proposed method therefore depends on timber condition and the finish you intend to apply afterwards. A trial area helps demonstrate the likely result and whether further preparation will be necessary.

We consider nearby planting, garden furniture, neighbouring boundaries and the condition of posts and fixings. Access to both sides of a fence may need the neighbour’s agreement. Any loose panels or hazards should be dealt with before cleaning starts.

Timber must be allowed to dry appropriately before many stains or protective products can be applied. Drying time depends on the weather, the wood and the chosen finish. Staining, painting and replacement panels are separate from cleaning unless your quotation states otherwise.

Your questions, answered

Can a grey fence look new again?

Cleaning can reveal a brighter surface, but the result depends on the timber’s age, condition and exposure. A uniform new-wood finish cannot be guaranteed.

Can I stain the fence afterwards?

Often, but the wood must be suitably prepared and dry. Follow the stain manufacturer’s guidance and allow for any additional preparation.

Do you replace damaged panels?

Replacement is not included in a cleaning quote unless stated. Unsound panels should be repaired or replaced before cleaning.
